Light Notes (07/26/06):Weather: When I moved to Corona, I second-guessed my decision of moving in late August; I have never been so hot in my life! Well, since then I have adapted well to the weather shifts and prepared myself for the 3 month stretch that is ‘summer’. When I watch the news, weather is usually that last thing on my list of things I am tuning in for; come on, it’s Southern California! But, you may have noticed Kevin writing up weather forecasts specific to the Inland Empire region on our message board. Not only has Kevin taken the time to spell out the forecast from Corona to San Bernardino but he is also including state-of-the-art weather models from the Google Earth Maps. If you have a hankering, check out the message board and comment on Kevin’s work.The Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos: You may or may not have noticed that the tenants for the development are going up and down faster than gas prices. While we do our best to keep everyone ‘in the loop’ and abreast of what is happening for The Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos, we want to assure you we are trying to keep up with the changes.Message Board Comments:“Corona High School 20 year reunion! Move over Dos Lagos, now there’s something meatier? (07/19/06) CORONA, CA-A partnership of local and European real estate investors, developers and architects plans to develop Toscana Marketplace, a 404,000-SF mixed-use center and has named a team to lease and sell the pad sites as well as handling other leasing responsibilities at the new center.The new project will occupy a 32-acre site east of the I-15 Freeway at Indian Truck Trail and Temescal Canyon roads. The site is just south of the city of Corona and north of the city of Lake Elsinore. The in-line space will total about 246,400 SF, with the rest of the 404,000 SF to be taken up by the pads, one of which will be the site of a hotel. Construction is expected to start next spring and be completed in late fall of 2008.The major sites comprise approximately 107,500 SF and the smaller three pads total about 28,000 SF, with the remaining 22,000 SF of the center designated for professional office condominiums. According to a demographic analysis of the shopping center's trade area that, the types of tenants likely would include a supermarket, a drug store, hard and soft goods retailers, restaurants and community service businesses.“Overall, the immediate region around the site is undergoing a great deal of development,” the demographic report says. The DDS research for the project showed that “ an estimated 35 residential projects along with 14 specific plans are in various phases of development.” The analysis notes that the shopping center will be conveniently accessible for an estimated 132,000 travelers along Interstate 15 via a full proposed interchange at Temescal Canyon Road. Retail competition for the project “is very limited with only one proposed anchor retail center within the site’s shopping center trade area,” the report points out, and estimates indicate significant future growth in the area. For example, the shopping center trade area population of 20,700 is expected to reach nearly 27,000 by 2008 and to grow to more than 62,000 at build-out of the residential projects proposed and under way in the area. Median annual household income in the trade area is already more than $73,000. You want pictures? (07/12/06) 7 years ago, when I first stepped into the Inland Empire area I would have never imagined the quickened pace the region was about to take with the development of its homes, retail, office and industrial space.When we arrived, homes were approaching $200,000. Fine dining consisted of Miguel's and you were excited when you heard Island's was coming to town (no offense Island's, love and recommend the Mula burger on a wheat bun). And home, retail, office and industrial development was only on the fringes of realizing the potential of the region.Now, fast-forward 7 years! The eastern region of the Inland Empire is virtually tapped for lots to build on and like all things that have a supply/demand it has had a measurable impact on property owner's equity, price per square foot, and the 'quality' of the project (in my estimate has dramatically improved). You may have discovered our coming soon webpage in your webpage travels and may have noticed many of the projects happening in Corona. As part of our efforts to give you more for your dollar (donations are always accepted), we are attempting to include projects outside of Corona. Today, we are going to focus on projects in Beaumont, Temecula and yes, Corona! The projects are as follows:• Beaumont Hanshaw Property Corona Compton Office Complex (off Compton Drive across from Home Depot, adjacent 15 freeway• Corona Lakeshore Plaza at the Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos• Corona Miguel’s Restaurant at the Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos• Corona Orchard II (off California Drive across from Home Depot, adjacent Wal-mart)• Temecula RetailHave a project you want featured? Relaxing, not so-busy plans and food galore! And, for those of you who love the heat this was your weekend! Between spending time with the family, friends and running our errands we were trying to put the final touches on ‘what’ we would be doing for the 4th of July. We had received some suggestions (thank you) for how to spend the day; we decided on the Corona 4th of July parade. What struck me on the 2nd anniversary of attending this great event is that it’s the simple things like parades that bring out the ‘good’ in people. Everyone was moved to smile bigger and their child-like spirits were visibly present! These are the same people driving the 91 freeway flipping you the bird and running you off the road; more parades please! The parade was a unique mix of clubs, cars, council members and commercialization. The highlights for me were the West Coast Customs ‘Monster Truck’, the pass-over by the vintage planes, the kids/pets/bicycles on parade and the vintage cars!Pictures and video can be found HERE!July 2006 Website Traffic: We experienced one of the biggest months of our existence in July 2006! I am always amazed by the numbers, always amazed! I neither take the success of this sight for granted nor do I assume I need to work any less to satisfy the good people who visit us! I just want to personally thank everyone for your interest!!!Our Message Board: Just a quick note to let you know that from time to time I receive requests for subjects and I am trying to ‘round out’ the board to satisfy everyone (I know, impossible). If there is a subject you want posted and/or a special place for you please let me know; I am very flexible. Lastly, from time to time there may be ‘gray area’ material that is not meant to offend anyone but is meant to provoke some thought and discussion. I assure you every precaution is made to filter out inappropriate material and that includes members. There are some really interesting thought-provoking subjects worth checking out now!COMMENT ON EDITORIALWHAT'S ON YOUR MIND?________________________________________________Fireworks in the Inland Empire (06/28/06)In an effort to fulfill the appetites of the visitors of Mycitycorona.com, I have compiled a list of Inland Empire 4th of July events! Try this Board! (06/21/06) Some messages from the message board that I would like to share: On restaurants coming to the Inland Empire: “I am really glad that our area is getting new businesses and restaurants. I just was wondering if we could attract some "non-chain" restaurants. For example, maybe you can talk to David Wilheim of Culinary Adventures in Orange County. He own many of the trendy restaurants in the Newport Beach area, like French 75, Chat Noir, Rouge, Chimayo etc. It would be cool if some restaurants in either Norco or Corona could be built on a hill (kind of like Orange Hill Restaurant or Orange Mining Company), so it would have a pretty view of the city lights. Are there any thoughts of breakfast cafes? I do like the Cowgirl Cafe, but we need more! Maybe something like a Plum's in Costa Mesa. Well I know you are all doing a wonderful job building the city! Now we just need to let the businesses know that this area is growing and we have money to spend!” [Read More]On Rumors/News: “Any idea on what the hold up is with the shopping center they have been building across from the Shell Station on Ontario Ave and the 15 freeway?. . .Also, when completed, do you have an idea what business will be there?” [Read More]On Events: “I'm trying to set up a conference for all IE small business owners at a place where we could network in a comfortable environment. If this sounds the least bit intriguing, please reply. This could be the beginning of something big. Hope to hear from you, IE.” [Read More]On Traffic: “MAD AS HELL! Here's what eats at me I am obeying the laws while cars are cutting in front of me or driving in the right turn only lane and at the last second cut into the freeway onramp lane! EVERY d**n DAY!!!!! Hire or dispatch the police to the onramp areas and write hundreds of tickets!!!!!!! The ticket revenue should pay for at least a portion of the police issuing tickets.” [Read More]On Dos Lagos: “Dos Lagos has finally started working on the Lakes now. I see the foot bridge being developed. I wonder if all that will open in October as well as the stores. Pretty cool. Does anyone know exactly which restaurants are going to be there as well?” [Read More]COMMENT ON EDITORIALWHAT’S ON YOUR MIND?_______________________________________________The Winds of War (06/14/06) The winds of war are coming to the Corona and Norco area early 2007. And in the wind I smell hickory, Barbecue sauce, smoke and spices! Crazy talk? No my friends, I am talking about one of the most exciting things to hit this area in a long time. That’s right…a serious Barbecue showdown is coming to the Inland Empire region and it’s about to make things exciting! Enter Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill, the crème de la crème of Barbecue houses; I would be remised if I didn’t mention Louise’s in the same breath! Coming to the Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos in Corona, California in early 2007 Wood Ranch’s style is Claim Jumper meets Houston’s meets The Yard House Restaurant; intimate, stylish and comfortable. Wood Ranch’s portions are big, their flavor is bold and their appeal has you craving dishes like their sweet potato sides, BBQ chopped salad or Tri-Tip. It will be an instant favorite, I promise you that!Renderings of the restaurant can be found HERE! Additionally, HERE is the official press release for the project!Enter Fat Daddy’s Barbecue and Backwoods Barbecue, the local Barbecue players. It has all of the drama of a good Hollywood movie. Local Councilman/Business Owner Steve Nolan and local Fat Daddy’s Business Owner ‘Pops’ pitted against the arch rival chain-operating Barbecue house. In grade school you would do what any sensible kid would do when the bully walked up to you; play dead, run like hell or get the first punch in! Personally, I say go for the jugular but that’s just me! Patrons of these local Barbecue houses will only be so faithful until they get a sweeter taste on their lips; and I am not talking about the kind of sauce they are smearing on their ribs! It will come down to service, price, experience, locality and convenience; look to Wal-Mart as a case study!When I learned Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill was coming to Corona I ran out and went to Fat Daddy’s Barbecue; we needed to eat and me love the Fat Daddy’s! Anyway, I was able to sit down with ‘Pops’ and he shared some interesting tidbits with me. While I had reported some time ago that Fat Daddy’s was going to open a 2nd location at the Corona Orchard II it turns out that they indeed will not after all; many reasons none too specific to share. I was hoping for the happier version like not only were they going to open the Corona Orchard II location but there were plans to open several locations…but, it would not be.Who is going to win the war? My guess is that patrons will be picky and will begin comparing the tastes, the service and the price they are dishing out. Have you waited longer at a restaurant because the eats were great and it was convenient? I have but I have also waited longer at a restaurant because the service was sub-standard and recoiled from the foods taste coupled by what I had to pay to get it! Fat Daddy’s and Backwoods is good, good food…but does it stack up to Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill? Would I prefer to spend the day at the Crossings at Corona and hop over to Dos Lagos for a quick bite? Or will I be enjoying the Lakes at Dos Lagos in one of their ‘250 seats’ in the amphitheater? Or maybe I am faithful and will forgo these temptations to visit Fat Daddy’s or Backwoods…profound choices are about to be made!COMMENT ON EDITORIALWHAT’S ON YOUR MIND?_______________________________________________Coming to Corona: Corona Cerritos Plaza (06/07/06)If you have driven Ontario Avenue or the 15 freeway you may have noticed construction taking place on the corner of Ontario and State Street; known officially as the Corona Cerritos Plaza. No, I am not speaking about The United States of America versus Russia, Tupoc versus Notorious BIG or the like. I am speaking about the Inland Empire versus the rest of Southern California (for the sake of argument, I have excluded Orange County because they have a movie and a television show named after them…they receive enough ‘air-time’).Several years ago, even before I moved into the Inland Empire, I had notions about what the Inland Empire was and was not; it tended to lean towards what the Inland Empire was not. Development was ramped with housing in a time when prices were only beginning to percolate. I discovered that this region was poised for greatness and the crowds would follow (where from, the OC…you guessed it). Now, that all sounds nice and dandy. There were some real tenacious times when retail development moved slower than my patience-meter would accommodate. Or times where I thought we were missing a real opportunity to snub our noses at the rest of Southern California.I can’t tell you how many bad remarks I have heard about the Inland Empire from friends (that’s a nice name for them), local KROQ DJ’s Kevin and Bean (still love the radio station), a moron who run a ‘valley of the dirt people’ website in the IE and the like. Perception is reality until you change it, right? We have moved mountains (or cleared ground for more housing) to change this perception of the Inland Empire. Leading the pack is Corona, Temecula, Chino Hills and Norco.Herb Higgins, a current Council Member and former Norco Mayor shared a point this week on the Mycitycorona.com message board that kind of shook me! He mentioned bringing in some restaurants and businesses to the area ranging from Louise’s (I love Louise’s) to Trader Joe’s (and I love Trader Joe’s). So what, you may ask. Well, it’s a mark of the change and progress this region has seen over the last 10 years or so. For Norco to make such a leap of faith and the businesses to come and build sends a signal. When I first arrived in Corona some 7 years ago, the first Starbuck’s (as I was told) had only been there for about 2-4 years before. Imagine, marking progress by your first Starbuck’s; anyway. Yesterday, I learn Wood Ranch is coming to Corona (who would have thunk).Here’s my point in all of this…the Inland Empire is the awaking sleeping giant.COMMENT ON EDITORIALWHAT'S ON YOUR MIND?____________________________________________________Post it, I dare you (05/24/06)This week I would like to discuss a little thing called the ‘Message Board’. But, as the conversations become more diverse and personal, we will make an effort to personalize the boards as to make them more interesting. With topics like Editorials, Rumors/News, Events, Real Estate Center, City Talk and Feedback there are many topics that can ‘wet the palette’.Try out the Message Board today…please be kind, don’t waste time bagging on a fellow boarder and bring some substance to the table. Read on and let me explain the title.Exhibit 6th Street:Corona has a ‘Grand Vision’; I read this to be true in a Press Enterprise story this weekend. Corona wants to develop the interior circumference of the Grand Circle into “…professional/medical office, the creation of a sense of place, a mix of housing types, retail, mixed use, educational & cultural opportunities, restaurants, pedestrian orientation..” My reaction…BRAVO!!! Imagine the current blight wiped away with the newer, cleaner smell of paint, plants and coffee houses…concentration 6th street!6th Streets exalt from the peril of lawnmower, Tire/Lube shops, Fast food and those great bi-lingual shops has been a long time coming. Corona is a Major League player whose been playing in the minors too long; it’s time to step up to base and hit a home-run. Now is the time!!! Similar to the manner that Norco was forced to handle the Hamner development project, Corona should take the lead in recognizing what worked 15 years ago and what will work 15 years from now!Exhibit Grand Avenue:The first time I drove Grand Avenue I got lost; I was looking for the post office, Salvation Army, something. Needless to say, I found myself in unknown territory…scary territory (and it was day time). For good or bad, this area is part of the cities welcome mat when people visit City Hall…the surrounding areas are old and show its age. What’s my point here? The city has over-achieved when it came to the more rural areas like The Crossings, Dos Lagos, The Retreat and Sycamore Creek while just outside its doors lie the remnants of the ‘Grand Avenue’.Mix-use development is the wave of the future. Its very nature exists for the convenience and accommodation of a growing population. Meet the clash of Older Corona meeting mix-use development, being broad-sided by lower income residents living directly centered in its plan.Exhibit Irvine, California:Kathleen Dever of the Corona Historic Preservation Society was quoted as saying "We don't want it to look like Irvine, especially around the Circle”. I can appreciate the balance of old and new development but to vehemently exclaim we don’t want to be the big kid on the block is a tad near-sighted as I see it. Understanding and appreciating that a large portion of the high income, college graduate transplants traveling into Corona are those very residents who came from Orange County. They did not move here to eat at Hunny’s, shop at the costume shop or the like. They came here because they could cash out their equity and buy a huge house with a huge lot. And moreover, they are clamoring for the mix-use experience as it relates to the shopping, the restaurants and the ‘Junoesque’ of Orange County.Kathleen, I do understand your position. A sequence of open spaces and roof gardens on top of the two levels of garage provides a continuous pedestrian experience designed to encourage shoppers and office users to interact throughout the site. Surface parking for the retail area is conveniently located to stimulate walk-in business. Are the Lakes a mistake? (03/01/06)
Happy March to you, where does time go?
Many of the visitors of MyCityCorona.com, I imagine, are home-owners? I myself am a home-owner! Some 5-7 years ago, housing prices in Corona, Norco and its neighboring Cities (let’s say almost everywhere) were affordable enough to buy a large home with a large lot; in most cases. Nowadays, good luck for you first time buyers!
But wait, there’s a large movement away from the big housing developers (that was so 1999) and towards what I like to call ‘Apartment Reclaiming’ or Condo Conversions. It’s ultimately something that happens when the pendulum moves away from a hot Real Estate market to a softer market that attempts to accommodate the lower sector of home buyer. If you doubt this point, take notice to all of the big housing developers ‘Deals’, ‘Sales’ and ‘Incentives’…if you can afford it, maybe a good time to buy big? But, that’s not the subject today!
Condo Conversions: When an apartment’s owner or it’s new owner decides to move away from the Apartment ‘Renting’ or ‘Leasing’ and sells the units as a deeded condominium; hence the conversion of apartments to condominiums.
‘The Lakes’ are one of a handful of condo conversions in the Corona/Norco area that offer such a purchase. For the money, $199,000 and up, a new home buyer finds themselves in a unique position of affordability. With amenities like a common pool, tennis court, walking paths and as the name exclaims ‘The Lakes’ there is a lake that residents can enjoy. But, with conversion come some questions; what happened to all of those people who lived there before? Odds are they were given options to buy there units, and if they left they under amicable conditions (versus trashing the place). What about the condition of the property as it relates to structural improvements including cosmetic, plumbing, etc. These are all good questions to ask when considering such a purchase.
I am simply pointing out there are alternatives to renting. Properties like ‘The Lakes’ are worth visiting for yourself.

I can’t ‘Shut Up’ about Dos Lagos...business owners take heed! (02/22/06)
Some fast-fun facts about the new the live-work homes at Dos Lagos, as follows:
• 93 attached units of for-sale homes with storefronts.
• Businesses that will be allowed in the Dos Lagos live-work units include boutiques that sell apparel and other products sewn on the premises; artist sales galleries; photography studios; and offices of professionals such as accountants, lawyers and business consultants.
• Nail and hair salons also can set up shop in the neighborhood, but only with approval from the neighborhood's homeowners association.
• The live-work units at Dos Lagos will have three stories. The ground floor will have a two-car garage and between 450 and 700 square feet of space dedicated to businesses.
• A downstairs storefront window will face a walkway. The business owner's family will live in the top two floors where there will be three bedrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen, balcony patios and, in some plans, a family room.
• To accommodate customers, 40 parking spaces will serve the neighborhood. Also delivery zones are to be designated for delivery trucks such as UPS and FedEx.
• Prices have not been set but are estimated to start in the $ 400,000 range. The first units are expected to be ready in early 2007.
• At least 20 percent of each live-work unit must be reserved for business, and the business area cannot be converted to residential use or subleased.

I want my money back, Pizza-Man! (02/08/06)
There are very little things I get excited about more than food! I love good food, I love sampling new kinds of foods at Indian, Sushi, Fast Food, Thai, Southern, BBQ and other restaurants.
Before I go on, please don’t get the impression that I am a portly gentleman; I am in good shape for my age and I attempt to balance what I eat. No caffeine or colas but I love my coffee! Anyway, I digress!
We are pizza-people who have been bound by the same pizza restaurant since we arrived in Corona. Last Friday night, on a whim we deferred from our old friend to try a new ‘flyer’ pizza (meaning, I received a flyer in the mail and the pizza restaurant on the flyer looked good). We ordered a small pizza and an appetizer. I might as well have gone to Taco Bell and ordered a pizza there; do you get my point?
The pizza was dinky! I wasn’t expecting a mammoth pizza but hopefully a smidge larger than a 45-record size (for the younger crowd reading this a 45-record was our form of entertainment before CD’s). And it tasted extra ordinary…from an establishment that actually sounded Italian too! Needless to say, we both looked at each other with disappointment. You know what happens, you build up this image of something and the fantasy takes over; sounds like my College days…that’s a whole different editorial.
Anyway, I guess my point with today’s editorial is watch out when you differ from a friendly restaurant; danger lurks out there. Want-to-be pizza makers cost you time, money and Tums.
Note: I would mention the name of the pizza restaurant but I will leave that up for guess.

Traffic or Tra-thick? (02/01/06)
Has anyone noticed traffic patterns have improved over the last 12 months as it relates to heading into Orange County? Maybe, it's just me. I notice the time it takes to get on the freeway has improved considerably; once horrid and completely unacceptable it is now better than tolerable! That's the good news...and for those behind that 'fix', thank you!
Now, for the vast amount of commuters heading back into the Inland Empire region there has been little relief (including myself); that dilemma has me thinking. There is great incentive for the Orange County Leaders to champion those projects that bring revenue (and people) into their cities; Inland commuters buying lunch, gas, shopping and generating tremendous tax revenue for their cities. The OCTA purchase of the Toll Lanes was (in my little mind) a great chess play for the revenue and power that comes from owning a main toll-road into a growing region like the Inland Empire. They can and will dictate general use policy/projects for many years to come!
As I see it the Inland Empire Leaders, Business Owners and Residents have a large stake in how the future of commuting and Orange County (for that matter) either prospers or fails; let's hope the latter! Getting the Inland Empire commuters to work, live, play and spend in it's Region over the next 5-10 years will send a huge message to Orange County and their tax board.

What a week, learning to be a Father in Corona (01/25/06)
With the birth of my son last week, I have had lots of time to think about 'being a Father' in Corona; Between the diaper changes, the feedings, and the 'comforting'!
Where he will go to school, the bike paths he might ultimately take to that school, the park(s) he will play in, Corona/Norco Little League...so many thoughts! But, having made the decision to move here many years back there was a game-plan in place to 1) buy a home, 2) start a family and 3) if all goes correctly retire as an empty-nester in the city I know as Corona, California.
I have long admired the importance this city places on its Parks and Recreation programs. I have long admired the number of parks and future parks Corona has in development; always better than Gun and Liquor stores (please disregard 6th Street for a second). We can ride our bikes, fly our kites and do whatever it is park people do!

A Q & A with Dos Lagos (01/04/06)
What restaurants will be coming to Dos Lagos?
Camille's Sidewalk Cafe, Marble Slab Creamery; Salsa Mar; TGI Friday's. Note: The real restaurants will be announced soon! One speculated restaurant on my part is Benihanas.
Is the golf course open to the public, will it also be selling club memberships?
The golf course at Dos Lagos will be public. No memberships will be required. It is scheduled to open in late Spring 2006.
How has the sell-through of the Dos Lagos homes been? What is the anticipated layout of urban condominiums as it relates to the shops; i.e. above, near or set away from the shops.
Dos Lagos homes are selling quickly, many before they are even built. Construction is now underway for the Shady Grove and Market Street neighborhoods. Shady Grove is an active adult neighborhood of 118 residences with Spanish Colonial, Spanish Monterey and Santa Barbara architecture. Four floor plans will range from 915 to 1,668 square feet. Market street is designed for growing and mature families. It is a collection of 124 stylish townhomes with floor plans ranging form 1,638 to 1,825 square feet. Home shoppers can get more information atwww.taylorwoodrowhomes.com or at 1-800-474-3222.
Do you feel you're in direct competition or running parallel with The Crossing at Corona?
We feel that Dos Lagos and The Crossings complement each other. The Crossings, with Old Navy and Chick-Fil-A seems to be tailored more for younger families and teen-agers. Dos Lagos is being marketed at a slightly older demographic with an interest in a more upscale shopping, dining and entertainment experience. I can see moms and dads dropping their kids off at The Crossings, then heading over to Dos Lagos for some quality time together on the golf course, at the spa or shopping and dining beside the lakes. Both projects enable area residents to enjoy themselves close to home.
What kind of events do you anticipate in the amphitheater area of the lakes?
The amphitheater at the lakes will host a variety of entertainment events, many of which will be put on by and for the community at large. Professional musicians, fashion designers, actors and local community groups will be using the venue to bring a cultural ambience to the heart of the project.
When is Dos Lagos expected to officially open?
Dos Lagos will continue to open in phases, but perhaps the most significant opening will be that of the Lifestyle Center, which opens in August 2006.
Are you seeing a large Orange, Los Angeles and San Bernardino County interest in the project?
The Dos Lagos project has drawn attention from throughout the Southern California region and beyond. It's of interest to the general public for the amenities it brings to the area. It's also got the attention of a broader geographic scope of developers, investors and economists, who see Dos Lagos as a beacon for other upscale mixed-use development coming into Western Riverside County.

What a Year; What a year 2006 will be (12/28/05)
As I reflect upon 2005, I have to stop and thank all of the good people of Corona and Norco for visiting MyCityCorona.com.
You have truly made 2005 special, at times odd and mostly rewarding for me! And if you believe 2005 was interesting, MyCityCorona.com will be turning up the volume in 2006! We have many things planned, in production and other things about to hit the public soon. If you are reading this and you have suggestions please let me know.
So, here's to closing out 2005 and to opening the door to 2006 with a bang! From my family to yours, please have a fun and safe New Years (go USC) and we look forward to seeing you in 2006.

Merry (insert politically correct term here) to you (12/21/05)
To think, we are just days away from Christmas...where does time go? Sunday, we will awaken to kids riding on new bikes, playing with new remote control cars, dressing new dolls and maybe even fido will get a new raw-hide bone. For myself, I really don't require too much...maybe a gift card to Home Depot or some shorts; I am easy that way!
Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to spend time with those you love (and those you put up with) and will receive all of the things you asked Santa for. I would have to say anyone who has had to sit on the 91 freeway for over an hour this year deserves something nice; just my opinion!
From MyCityCorona.com, its affiliates and advertisers we wish you a truly safe and Merry Christmas!

Fast food, watch out...the big restaurants are coming to Corona (12/14/05)

In a move I thought I would never be able to share with you, I can now claim there are some real restaurants coming to Corona! Not your typical deep fried, mayonnaise spread salt-bomb restaurant either! No, I am talking about the real McCoy...Benihana's! Yes, I said it...Benihana's!!! This is the iron the shirt, press the pants and make room on the credit card kind of establishment; not to be confused with the tank top, shorts and flip-flops cafes that run amuck! If you are not familiar with Benihana's, I suggest you do a little homework and read up on them! Though its final resting spot has not been confirmed (I have a call in), my guess on the matter has it falling directly on Dos Lagos; a second guess is The Retreat...but, I hedge on that guess. Can you picture it...the sun is setting, you are looking over the twin lakes of Dos Lagos (presumably) after a long day of shopping and the smell of Benihana creations are filling your nasal senses (I am drooling as I write this). Congratulations Corona, fine job Council!

The announcement follows:

Benihana Inc. (NASDAQ:BNHNA) and (NASDAQ:BNHN) announced today that it has signed definitive leases for new RA Sushi restaurants in Corona and Torrance, California.

The two new units increase to 16 the number of RA Sushi restaurants operating or under development nationwide, five of which are in the State of California. The new RA Sushi restaurants announced today will each measure approximately 4,500 square feet plus additional outdoor seating, and are expected to be open in late calendar 2006."RA Sushi has shown itself to be a dynamic restaurant concept with a sushi and Japanese fusion menu, and an exciting dining environment that is proving increasingly popular with its targeted market," said Joel A. Schwartz, CEO and President of Benihana. "Moreover, our experience has shown that by clustering our RA Sushi restaurants geographically, we can achieve scale in marketing as well as faster development and realizations among newer units."

The Crossing...Going once, going twice, sold! (12/07/05)

I figured this article was worth sharing for the residents of 'The Crossing' Apartment Complex who might not know what has transpired this week; as follows:

CORONA, CA-Hammer Ventures of San Diego has acquired a 296-unit apartment complex called the Crossing from Archstone-Smith for $53.9 million as a condo conversion play, according to Transwestern Multi Housing Capital Advisors. The property is a 13-building complex at 2125 High Point Dr. that was built in 1989 and consists of 13 three-story buildings.

Curtis Palmer of Transwestern Multi Housing Capital Advisors tells GlobeSt.com that the listing drew multiple offers and that despite the large number of conversions of apartment complexes into condominiums in Southern California, opportunities for condo conversion still remain for the right investor profile. Palmer, Herb Chase and Alex Quintana of Transwestern brokered the deal on behalf of Englewood, CO-based Archstone-Smith, a REIT that specializes in apartments.

The Crossing consists of one- and two-bedroom apartments with amenities including washers and dryers in all units, patios and balconies at most units, skylights, high ceilings and other upscale architectural features. The complex, near shopping and transportation corridors, features racquetball and tennis courts, a gated entrance, a newly renovated fitness center and other facilities.

The Corona deal is the latest in a series of Southland transactions in recent years for Archstone-Smith, which bought the 416-unit Somerset Park apartment complex in the Orange County city of Placentia in August for 479.3 million. Southern California is the second-largest core market for the REIT-behind Washington, DC-and Archstone-Smith has been involved in some of the largest multifamily deals in this region in recent years.

The Corona condominium conversion will be the latest in a series of condo plays for the San Diego developer, whose projects include the $52-million Little Tokyo Lofts in Los Angeles, where Hammer is converting a six-story former office building into a 161-unit multifamily development.

Light Notes (11/30/05)

Thanksgiving: First and foremost, I hope everyone's Thanksgiving Holiday was relaxing and well spent. We enjoyed our Thanksgiving watching movies, spending the day with friends and relatives eating entirely too much! Corona and Norco shared some perfect weather...what a place to live!

Changing of the Guard: 2006 will usher in a new Corona Mayor (Karen Spiegel), a new Pro Tem Mayor (Eugene Montanez) and will usher out Corona's current Mayor and favorite whipping-boy (Darrell Talbert) who has served 3 terms in the past 11 years. Karen's Husband Bobby Spiegel happens to be the President of the Chamber of Commerce. 2 powerful people, 1 family...will Karen make http://www.mycitycorona.com 2006 most influential people?

Dos Lagos: Look for our insight to the Dos Lagos project in the next week's editorials.

Adopt a Street: The City of Corona has put together a really smart and necessary program called 'Adopt a Street'. Business and Non-Business entities can participate in this program, for more information click here.

Street Improvements: Driving the streets of Corona over the last 6 months has been haphazard at best; rain, water-flow pipe installation, road improvements have not helped the plight. In the last few weeks I have noticed repaving improvements, making for a smoother drive and less stress on my car. Just in time for the rains!

Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos and Christmas at The Crossings at Corona (11/16/05)

Weekly, http://www.mycitycorona.com/ offers an opinion and/or a first glimpse at the vast amount of development happening around. This week we look at the crown jewel of Corona, The Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos. Similar in stature to Fashion Island in Newport Beach and Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga...it will definitely put Corona into the forefront of retail shopping! In doing so, it will also smear away the stinging image of the old '909'; touche Orange County!

Planned shops for The Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos include American Eagle Outfitters, Bath & Body Works, Beauty One, Bella's Boutique, Ben Bridge Jewelers, Brighton Collectibles, Camille's Sidewalk Cafe, Champs Cuts, Chicos, Clarks, Coldwater Creek, Eddie Bauer, Express, Finish Line, J. Jill, Jos. A. Bank, Karen Allen Salon & Spa, Kids Koture, Lee Nails, Marble Slab Creamery, The Movie Experience, Rocky Mountain Chocolate, Salsa Mar, Select Comfort, Suthin Savvy, Sunglass Hut, TGI Friday's, Rack 'N Trail, Urban Outfitters, Victoria's Secret, and White House/Black Market.

"The project includes a 350 car parking structure and is part of the Empire Towers campus development that will ultimately contain approximately 500,000 square feet of Class "A" office space in multiple buildings...the first phase of 400,000 entertainment and retail portions of the "Lifestyle Center" that is scheduled to break ground this fall...The Promenade shops will offer high end retail stores in an outdoor mall center that will be part of the Dos Lagos master planned community being developed along Interstate 15 in Corona, California...The Promenade shops will include shops, movie theaters and restaurants in a pedestrian friendly outdoor "main street environment".

On a Christmas note, Saturday November 19th at 6:00 PM The Crossings at Corona will be hosting "A Classic Christmas Lighting Ceremony" at the theater north of the fountain. Santa will be arriving in a horse drawn carriage and the evenings festivities will include a performance by the All-American Boys Chorus, tree lighting and coloring books for the children (while supplies last).

And while I am on the subject of The Crossings at Corona you can add Beela Dancewear, Panera Bread and Rosines Rotisserie and Grill to the A list retailers coming to Corona. As always, See pictures and Store Directories on our Coming Soon webpage.

Two new Retail/Housing developments, MyCityCorona.com gives you a first look! (11/09/05) Corona, California: The Retreat. "The Retreat is a unique, upscale environment scheduled for 71,000 square feet of retail and office development. Adjacent to the I-15 freeway in South Corona, 95,000 cars pass the site daily. With direct access to the luxurious gated Retreat community featuring a private Jack Nicklaus design Golf Course, its easy to see why 30% of Riverside County's new homeowners are in this trade area. Immediate freeway access and visibility create a perfect environment for a convenient neighborhood commercial project. With anticipated groundbreaking in the 4th quarter of 2005, and Grand Opening in Fall of 2006, The Retreat is the premier location for office and retail in the affluent community of South Corona." See pictures on our Coming Soon webpage titled 'Exclusive Preview, The Retreat'. Norco, California: River Ridge. "Located on the corner of River Road and 2nd Street in Norco, River Ridge is a proposed development of a strategic corner location in the vibrant community of Norco. Situated on the border of Norco and Corona, the River Ridge development conceptually brings the addition of a long awaited drug store and updated retail opportunities, as well as new residential options for the area. With great visibility and easy access, River Ridge is a high traffic destination for any retailers looking for expansion opportunities." See pictures on our Coming Soon webpage titled 'Exclusive Preview: River Ridge'. What's on your mind Corona/Norco? ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ The Crossings at Corona...Have you noticed the retailers? (11/02/05) With every new retailer that opens at The Crossings at Corona, Main Street Village and even Dos Lagos (when it readies to open in Spring 2006), http://www.mycitycorona.com/ strives to update you on the who, what and why. Check our 'Coming Soon' webpage for more detail! In the event you have not visited The Crossings at Corona in some time, here is a brief update for you. Barrett's Comfort Shoes, Daniel's Jewelers, Hilbreese Childrens Boutique, Kings Fish House, Party World, The Men's Warehouse and Zip Fusion Sushi are the latest to sign up for business. You also may have noticed that Cold Stone Creamery and Beach Bums have opened for business while Ethan Allen is close to opening. While many retailers have come with aspirations of shoppers green, I have not seen the flocking that I really anticipated; don't get me wrong we have gone miles beyond what existed when I first moved here! Many of the smaller shops remain vacant; perhaps I will not let my impatience get the better of me! What's on your mind Corona/Norco? Note: Since writing this 'Natural Bliss Aveda Day Spa & Salon' has added its name to the roster!

Interesting and worth sharing (10/26/05)
CORONA, Calif. (AP) - More than 100 Luiseno Indian artifacts - including 500-year-old bowls and arrowheads - were unearthed by a construction crew at the Canyon Oaks housing development.
"It was almost a treasure trove out there. To have that many in one location and buried down ... it was a very unusual event," said Jim Fagelson, Riverside County's principal planner.The artifacts have added to the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians' collection.
The KB Home crew was grading the area near Corona when the items were discovered, developer spokeswoman Cameron Triebwasser said. Workers had to grade in 6-inch increments after that with tribal monitors watching the process in August and September.Bowls as wide as 14 inches, arrowheads and striking stones for creating other objects were among the items found, Fagelson said.
Pechanga representatives, who knew the site might have artifacts, were observing the crews' work when the pieces were found.The Soboba tribe's cultural resource office has since taken over monitoring the site, said Carol Gaubatz, a program analyst at the state Native American Heritage Commission, which helps protect ancient Indian sites.
"You're living in a place that's been inhabited as long as 12,000 to 15,000 years. You're going to find a lot" of artifacts, Gaubatz said. What's on your mind Corona/Norco?

Trader Joes, not coming to a town near you? (10/19/05) I read this week that Coreland, a Tustin Commercial Management Company, will be the Managing Company of the new Main Street Village located between Ontario Avenue and Main Street. I was thrilled to learn that Trader Joe's, the food retailer, would be the anchoring store for the property (I could only imagine the applause that would create amongst Corona's residents). Corona finally makes it mark and closes the deal with Trader Joes. Always being the naysayer, I decided to call Coreland myself to confirm that this was in fact true. They stated that indeed this was a deal that was in the works (was being the operative), but had fallen from grace some time ago. Corona residents might be mindful of the new 24-Hour Fitness located in a large spot that looks reminiscent of a vacant Trader Joes store. "Hmmm", I exclaim! As it turns out Coreland never updated their press release when it was sent out on Monday; good information about two years back. The new Henry's Market, owned by Whole Foods, is now the major natural foods player in the Corona area and seems to have squashed all hopes for a Trader Joes; at least for the short term. In speaking with an employee of Trader Joes, he was painfully aware of the politics that goes into the commercial retail field and the lengths Citys will go to get one at the expense of others. Whats on your mind Corona/Norco? ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ Shared notes from our visitors (10/12/05) "Corona Art Association: Art entered in the Corona Lemon Festival will be featured at Corona Heritage Park Museum and Fine Art Gallery, 510 W. Foothill Blvd., Corona. The show opens Oct. 8th and will run until Nov. 11, 2005, Tues-Sat. 10am-2pm. Pictures entered in the Lemon Festival's Historical and Open Show will be displayed with continuing artwork from the Artist's of the Year Show." "There are really too many churches in Corona. Corona needs more places to dine and spend with the families. A Trader Joes, PF Changs, another spectrum. I see all this money going into these church compounds. I agree church is important but give me a break. The Crossroads looks like a shopping mall and at the corner of Magnolia and Main there are two churches across from each other. I think Corona has enough churches and needs to focus more on other things."

Porn and Scorn (10/05/05) This week has been filled with odd Corona tidbits that I thought were worth sharing. Corona, as it turns out, has a Church/Ministry that pits itself against the evils of pornography (you can learn more at http://www.xxxchurch.com/) I always knew Corona was the hub for many different denominational churches. Anyone who is unaware of this fact should drive the length of Ontario Avenue and many jump out at you (again, my motto has always been more churches and less liquor/gun stores). Take a moment to visit them and their message about Porn Sunday "Exposing America's Dirty Little Secret" on October 9th, 2005. And, if that was not interesting enough...Another Corona oddity to share! Apparently, there is a Pennsylvania bill that is up for consideration that would ban candies that taste like pot. Corona Based Chronic Candy (you can learn more at http://www.chroniccandy.com/), would be effected by such a ruling. Who knew Corona had a manufacturer of hemp-influenced candy products? A reference from the article I read reads as follows: "It's nothing but a hysterical tough-on-crime sound-bite reaction," said Thomas Anthony Durkin, attorney for the Corona, Calif.-based Chronic Candy. "With all due respect to the legislator, I don't believe that there's any connection between these lollipops and use of drugs." In an age when Corona is attempting to lift its image from the old stereo types of the past...
What's on your mind Corona/Norco? ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ Sign Up Now in Corona (09/28/05) Realtor 'Open House' signs, Contractor/Landscape Lawn signs, 1-800-Junk-Now signs, Refinance Now signs...call them whatever you want. Corona, with its housing and development explosion, has become a debauchery of pop-up ads. Many of you, I am sure, have experienced pop-up ads on your computer...they are annoying! Drive on Lincoln, Foothill, Cajalco, McKinley, Magnolia and you will see these signs everywhere! Are there no city ordinances that restrict the number, placement, and/or style of these plastic and wire ads? Personally, I find them to be an eye-sore and could easily do without them. They tend to muck-up the neighborhood and give presence to others who think their signs would look real cozy next to the others. And dont even get me started with those manned-advertising signs where a 16 year old is pointing to a new housing development. What's on your mind Corona/Norco?

Light notes...(09/21/05) Has Paradise been lost in Corona? 'Paradise Garden Center' in Corona (between California Avenue and Taber Avenue) has 'lost its lease'. Well, so it appears. The owner and landlord of the Paradise Garden Center property, 'Canyon Community Church' next door, has negotiated with the owners of the Paradise Garden Center to use the 10 acres of land that currently inhabits shrubs, trees, plants and more. Speculation is that there will be a housing and/or business development built on the land. Most residents might remember the same kind of thing happened to the 'Town and Country Nursery' (off of Ontario Avenue near Main Street) where the Fieldstone Homes now inhabit; they now inhabit a spot off Main Street in South Corona. Corona and Norco businesses BEWARE! There is a Riverside resident and business owner (name known, but not shared) who is snatching up website addresses (using the popular .com addresses) of businesses before those businesses have registered the names; that's not the issue! The business is later contacted with an offer of developing the website and/or attempting to sell back the web name for up to $1495.00; that's the issue! If you have a business, but are currently not registered it might be a good time to do so. A shared letter..."While at Best Buy Saturday I noticed the trees planted throughout the front of Best Buy and I think all over the parking lot? If there was ever a more messy and destructive tree I don't want to know about it...They will tear that parking lot at the Crossings to pieces. Now would be the time for someone to come out and check Carter Lane and go dig the trees at the Crossing up! Whoever selects the trees is not doing their homework. It will cost the city a bunch soon, as they are tearing up the sidewalks. Some cement is raised about 2" and when someone trips and breaks an arm or hip the lawsuit will be horrendous." A shared letter..."This morning alone I encountered three different women, during my hour long commute from Corona, applying make up in the fast lane. I’ve recently purchased a cell phone with a camera – a different story for jumping on that band wagon late. I am going to go on my own anti-campaign and start photographing these women and their cars (license plates included – if I’m lucky) and send them to the police department as these women pose a serious hazard on our roadways and freeways." ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ Stroll Down Corona Lane...Soon! (09/14/05) Thats Lane, not lanes...lets not get it confused with a bowling establishment! 'Corona Lane', the latest development in the South Region of Corona is part retail and part office. The project has been long and patient through the rainy season of 2005, only recently breaking ground. But, with momentum on its side it is moving quickly to curb the next cycle of rains (and pains). It stands Adjacent to the Lenny Dykstra Carwash on California Avenue and Taber Avenue with retailers El Pollo Loco, Tommys Burgers and Wal-Mart close-by; it is flanked by a busy and robustly thriving area. Tentative retailers include Mongolian Grill, Dippin' Dots Ice Cream, Philly's Best Cheesesteak, I Sold It! on eBay Store, Glam Girl Boutique, True Touch Nail Salon, Dr. Lopez Pediatric Dentist and Oggi's Family Pizza & Brew Pub! There are currently a handful of offices upstairs that have signed leases and we are told there are still a few offices available; served by a private elevator! Please contact Darrell Talbert if you are interested in leasing information. Think about it, lounging back at the office (great views, great center) putting down a Philly's Best Cheesesteak sandwich (take it from me, they are delicious)! But, if there is a first responder that needs your donations the most with the singe largest mobilization in the region it is http://www.redcross.org/ Each person knows how much they can give, hopefully many of you are also involved with local charities such as churches, clubs and organizations that have affiliates working in that devastated region of our Country. Fat Daddy's is Fat-tastic! (08/17/05) On a whim last night driving home, My Wife and I decided to stop by Fat Daddy's Bar-B-Q* and check it out; it was our first time! I have been craving (authentic) sweet potato pie for the last several weeks since I saw it being made on a cable show. I had visited the Fat Daddy's website and saw they offered sweet potato pie. We walked in and who was the first person to greet us but 'Pops' (or Mr. Fat Daddy, not so fat but very pleasant); the Owner and proprietor of this great food (I regret calling it food because it was more like magic than just ordinary food)! I salivated at the menu for a few minutes while Pops asked if I was ok...I was ok but the salivating made me weak. I debated over the cat fish, hot links, ribs or just skipping the entry all together and going straight to the prize...dessert! We settled on the chicken and rib combination plate; $14.95 of pure-bliss. The combination plate comes with 3 sides and a bread; we selected yams (heavenly), macaroni and cheese (delicious) and baked beans (oh my word!!!). And did I mention it was FREE dessert Tuesday...Peach Cobbler that will make your toes curl? I am convinced if I would have played the Mega-Millions Lottery we would have won too! Fat Daddy's has specials, as follows: Kids eat for free on Mondays, FREE dessert on Tuesdays, Senior Citizens Day on Wednesdays and Family Meal Day on Thursdays. I returned to our table after paying for the bill to find Pops greeting my Wife. He immediately gave me a hug (how many restaurant owners give you a hug?) and welcomed us to his establishment. We talked about the fact we were Fat Daddy firsts, that we have meant to visit before. Before our dinner was complete Pops will have visited our table several times, the last time I barely remember as I was in a heavenly-coma from all the good eats! Fat Daddy's has big plans for Corona...and the Inland Empire! Fat Daddy's plans to open up his next restaurant in the Orchard II Longs Drug Development center across from Wal-Mart and Home Depot on Ontario...can you say Cha-Ching? Over the next couple years Pops has plans to open up additional restaurants in select cities throughout the Inland Empire; Corona is privileged to have Pops and Fat Daddy's. Want to experience Fat Daddy's up close and personal? Back Woods Bar-B-Q and Fat Daddy's has a cook off this Saturday, see our Things To Do section for more information. * Fat Daddys BBQ Bistro 718 North Main Street Corona, California 951-736-3510 Whats on your mind Corona/Norco?

Corona residents speak some more...part deux! (08/10/05). This is a sampling of what's on their minds followed by my own comments in bold: "What do you know about the Dos Lagos Golf Course that appears to be nearing completion?"-For you golf-enthusiasts, here is a link to the new course http://www.doslagosgolf.com/ hopefully you find the answers you need. "I AM LOOKING FOR ANY INFORMATION ABOUT MY NIEHBORHOOD AND ALL THE NEW HOMES BEING BUILT ALL OVER MY IMMEDIATE AREA. WOULD ANYBODY KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY AREA OF RESIDENCE? WILL IT BE BULLDOSED? WILL MY PROPERTY BE BOUGHT FROM ME? HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE MY NIEHBORHOOD GETS BULLDOZED FOR NEW HOMES??? CAN ANYONE HELP ME ON THIS OR DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS?!!" -Get a map of the "actual city" of Corona from AAA or elsewhere. You can then compare to address on google or mapquest.The entire area where the dairies used to be is commonly called Eastvale, but has a Corona zip code. He is not in the city. El Cerrito, Trilogy, everything South of Weirick, is not in the city but also has a Corona zip code. Many people think they are in the city, but are not. (Answer provided by City Council Member to http://www.mycitycorona.com/). "Enjoy your web site. Maybe you can do an article on the road work being done on Foothill Pkwy. How many times are they going to "tear it up"? I just wish the contractor would return it to it's original condition when done!" -If my memory serves me, I believe the construction was being done to furnish additional/upgraded water lines to needed residents; please correct me if I am wrong. "...I wish a Walmart Supercenter would come to Corona." -With 2 Walmarts, 2 Targets (now carrying grocery items), countless Sav-Ons, Walgreens and a K-Mart (or should I say 'Sears Essentials') I think I will pass, but that's just me! ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ Corona Residents Speak and Speak loud! (08/03/05) What's on Corona residents minds? Well, in e-mail after e-mail they told me, some things I have wondered myself or have had friends in the community wonder the same things. This is a sampling of what's on their minds followed by my own comments in bold: "What's going on? There is finally some action going on in the vacant lot at Ontario and Rimpau streets. This was originally supposed to be a park but the city used the money elsewhere. What are they going to be building there or are we finally going to get our park?" - Rimpau Park is slated to be completed spring 2006* adjacent to the new Thomas Miller Mortuary and Crematorium; should make for an interesting adjacency. "I was told by a Trader Joes employee that Henrys has some kind of deal with the city of Corona that would prevent Trader Joes from coming to town. Do you know if this is true?" -This kind of contingency addendum commonly occurs in leasing/purchase contracts, that does not make it right or easy to swallow sometimes. I dont know if its true, hopefully someone on the council can comment (these questions have been posed to ALL members of the Corona City Council). "This is regards to the proposed development off of Green River and Paseo Grande. I attended the Town Hall meeting at the beginning of July. The developer lives in Palos Verdes and will not be affected by the traffic or lack of classroom space. Much was made out of his willingness to pay for traffic signals "out of his own pocket". Yeah, right. Somebody is paying for it. There is only one entrance/exit Street for the 260 homes. I talked with someone from the City Planning who said that the street could handle x number of cars per day. Maybe so, but the majority of the traffic will be at peak hours in the morning and evening. Overall, I got the impression that the developer had already bought his way for approval of this project. He should be required to live in this development himself and live next to it while it is being built." -The project is called Green River Ranch Towne Center project. I know several residents in the Green River/Sierra Del Oro who are both elated that new retail is coming and frustrated by plans to develop retail before infrastructure improvements are made. Heres my suggestion, if you have an extra room available send an invitation to the developer to spend some time with you to understand increased traffic patterns they are creating; last I knew http://www.vestar.com/ was the developer but this project is auspiciously missing from their current projects list where it once appeared (so dont quote me). "Road conditions/particularly Magnolia Ave in home gardens, this project has taken way, way, way too long to complete, why? and please dont tell me its the weather and what if Corona does redo a lot of roads would like to see a progress calendar...." -I dont know what to say, Corona's budget was posted and it will be interesting to see if this area (adjacent to the recently developed Corona Pointe) will be improved; we will have to wait for word from the City Council. * Source: Corona Parks and Community Services

What's on your mind Corona? (07/26/05) Each week I pose that definitive question "What's on your mind, Corona?" Some respond, others comment and some fall silent. I would like to hear from everyone reading this to let me know "What's on your mind?" Traffic, politics, Poll ideas, happenings, announcements, things about Corona we don't know, undiscovered restaurants, good deeds gone unrecognized, Corona High School haps, recognize a leader, write an editorial, rebut an editorial...whatever you want! And, for clarification it doesn't have to be a wordy Dissertation/Thesis on the Origin of the City of Corona; just a one liner, paragraph or full length work...whatever you want! That's easy, it's not like I am giving you homework or anything like that. Hey, if I can do it so can you...Really! So, what's on your mind Corona?

The house that Corona built! (07/20/05) Theres a phenomenal trend happening in Corona/Norco and unless you are blind or someone who suffers from Agoraphobia (Fear of leaving a safe place), you have seen it yourself! It lurks in many sizes, shapes, colors...its real estate and the value of your investment is somewhere between "Im the luckiest son of a gun" to "Holy cow, lets buy another"! Corona/Norco is in a unique and somewhat monopolistic position with regard to the real estate market. Heres my theory, small minded as it is! Orange County real estate prices are astronomical, in my opinion unrealistic for the cracker-jack properties and land they are offering. Corona bleeds on the outer fringes of Orange County and profits from the lower prices and less city-ego! More Home plus more land plus lower prices equal a white-hot market with little slowdown for the short term! Look around at all of the homes currently up for sale, track the time they are currently taking to sell and most importantly track the MEDIAN PRICE PER SQUARE FOOT! The following are a sample of the current median price per square foot in Corona/Norco*: City: Zip Code: $ Sq. Foot: 1 Year % Change: Norco 92860 $275.00 22.83% Corona 92879 $261.91 23.24% Corona 92880 $227.27 41.34% Corona 92881 $253.65 19.53% Corona 92882 $259.80 17.19% Corona 92883 $249.06 26.56% * Stats provided by The Press Enterprise Business Section 06/26/05. I believe there is little slow down for the Corona/Norco real Estate market and we will dramatically outpace the likes of Orange and Los Angeles Counties. Two reasons, we border Orange County and we are the gateway to a rapidly developing Inland Empire. With the future developments of Dos Lagos and smaller projects off Ontario Avenue, Cajalco, Magnolia and elsewhere Corona home owners have at least two more strong years of outpaced increases in their real property! Note to self: Become a Real Estate Agent soon! Whats on your mind Corona?

Bugs are gnat welcome, period! (07/13/05)
Summer...Heat, swimming, bar-b-ques, Otter-pops, Ice Cream trucks, kids running a-muck and yes, those pesky darn gnats and ants!
If there are two things at the top of my wife's 'hate' list it is gnats and ants; similar in spelling, one just got cheated out of the letter 'g'. And we all know that if it's at the top of her list, it will soon enough appear at the top of my list! Please tell me I am wrong but is Corona the national headquarters for these tiny and annoying varmints? The same time every year, the same places in my yard, the same smug looks on their face (for the purposes of illustration only, we will assume they have smug looks).
Having completed one of the heavier rainfall seasons on record, it probably makes sense that the cycle of life would be amplified; more ticks, more bugs, more birds, more rodents and so forth. But, am I really the sacrificial lamb for the gnats once I walk out my door; a slight exaggeration but nearly true! I also dread the time where the scouter ant(s) appears on the window seal, unannounced and without remorse.
My suggestions...spray now, don't wait. We use Ortho's 'Home Defense' spraying it on the inside/outside perimeter of the house. Visit Ace Hardware on 6th Street, Home Depot on Ontario Avenue or McKinley Avenue, or Lowe's off Magnolia Avenue. If that doesn't work, call one of a handful of Corona Bug specialists to come to your home and spray! The last thing you need are added hassles after working a long day and coming home to 'visitors' in the pantry, Apple Jacks and dish washer!
Don't make me say "I told you so"!

4th of July Festivities: Fizzle or Bang? (07/06/05) Some observations from this weekends 4th of July festivities in Corona, California. We decided to kick off the holiday weekend by taking our dog to Corona’s dog park at Butterfield Park on Sunday July 3rd. We (My Wife and I) were first timers, as was our dog, so we did not know the ‘rules’ of engagement; dog is allowed to sniff other dogs, bring or buy a ‘do-do’ bag, biscuits allowed, etc. Anyway, once our dog got acquainted with the other dogs everything was great! And who do we run into at the dog park? J.M. and his dog Winston! Go figure… Monday, the 4th of July was officially kicked off by the City of Corona Main Street USA Independence Day Parade. It was nice, starting promptly at 10:00 am. It was packed, little if any spaces left! It was hot…balmy and when there was a breeze it was just nearly tolerable (next year we will plan better)! Henry’s Market staff was graciously handing out free water to all that would have it. The cars, the marchers, the pets and the cycles were all perfect, but the parade was noticeably quiet. To our surprise there was only one band (the real kind, not the marching kind) who played at the end. They were sponsored by the Renaissance Church and they sounded great! Something for the organizers to consider next year. Our day ended with the Star Spangled Fireworks Spectacular at Corona High School. We packed everything in site! We might as well have driven up to Big Bear instead of driving 5 minutes to go watch fireworks. The stadium was filled with people, blankets, chairs, coolers, footballs, Frisbees, chips, dogs (hotdogs, that is)…you get the point! The sun was brisk, not as blistering as the previous hours; perhaps the nerves in my skin had not healed from earlier in the day! The entertainment was good…the band was Lynard Skynard like! The night’s fireworks were reminiscent of years past…not too bad (I won’t complain, I got my $3 worth). Overall, it seemed like most everyone had a good time!!! My compliments to the City Council and city organizers. What’s on your mind Corona?

4th of July, Corona Style (06/29/05).
First of all, Happy 4th of July weekend to all that are reading this! Can you believe the year is about to mark the half-way point and move us closer and closer to the Holiday Season...I am sure the Targets and Wal-Marts of the world are making room on their shelves right now to fill the 2005 Christmas items. Nonetheless, the holiday of independence, fireworks and over-eating is upon us and I intend to take full advantage of my freedoms (not counting the small, everyday freedoms my Wife lets me enjoy...kidding Dear!). For Corona residents waking up early Monday morning, the city has the Main Street USA Independence Day Parade between Ontario Avenue and Olive Street which is an event not to miss; starts at 10:00 am but I would arrive early for a good curbside seat(s). Floats, Marching Bands, Equestrian Units and Classic Cars are the staple of this event. But, there's also oddities like Wheels on Parade and Pets on Parade that Corona residents (their bikes and pets) can participate in and seem to enjoy. I don't know too many people who don't like a parade; it's those clowns you really need to watch out for! There are many things to do on the 4th of July after you have attended the parade...the bar-b-ques, the beach, the family get-together at the park and more! My Wife wants to drive down to the beach to see the fireworks along the coast. I on the other hand want to bypass the larger crowds, the traffic and the drive! So, we have settled (she doesn't know this yet) on the idea of going to the Annual Star Spangled Fireworks Spectacular (at Corona High School*). It is close enough that if I were to eat to many hot dogs and hamburgers, I could easily be wheeled back to my home. But seriously, the donation you make at the door is a minimal charge compared to the kind of charges you would pay at a larger event and/or in the money you would put out in gas to go somewhere far. The paid admission gets you access to the Corona High School field, where you can bring in blankets, Frisbees, coolers of food…first come first serve. When you arrive you will be entertained by a medley of band, song and local jovial presenters. The hours pass until the sky is illuminated in reds, oranges and purples; dusk is upon us! The crowd of people wait anxiously for the announcement that the fireworks are coming up next! And without much warning, the first booms echo throughout Corona and the skies are a blaze. The snack shack on the field is open and the sales from the food and beverages go towards the City of Corona's police program. So, maybe skip lunch and buy a little more to benefit this cause. 5 minutes to get there and about 15 to get home (allowing for traffic to clear the premises). I would suggest (without warranty) that anyone who has not attended either one of these events are missing out on something very special! For more information, please visit http://www.discovercorona.com/ * 1150 W. 10th Street Entertainment begins at 7:00 pm. Fireworks begin at 9:00 pm. What's on your mind Corona?

Order Up! (06/22/05). In thinking about the restaurants Corona has to offer its residents one lasting image comes to mind; fast food and hole-in-the-wall eateries! Now, I am not exactly complaining here. Fast food and eateries have their place in our immediate gratification society. In this case, I think I will focus on my favorite meal of the day...breakfast! There is nothing like slipping into a booth early in the morning with the smell of bacon, eggs, pancakes and coffee cooking in the background; my decaf, two Splendas and half and half are divine! Corona has has its share of great places for a cheap and hearty breakfast! We will, for the sake of argument, ignore the more popular venues like Denny's and IHOP; we all know these places are great places to get breakfast...especially at 1:00 AM after a night out! Some places worth noting though are Cal Oaks Burger*, Hunny's** and The Silver-Dollar Pancake House (currently under repair from a fire)***. On the weekend Cal Oaks Burger, a little hole-in-the-wall eatery, has you competing with others for a table. The prices are cheap, the portions are large and the quaintness of the place makes you want to return again and again! Hunny's, a larger higher volume establishment, has a steady stream of customers. It's a place where you sit and immediately get caught up in the busyness and history of the place! Regrettably, I have never visited or ate at The Silver-Dollar Pancake House, even though I have nagged my wife for years. It appealed to me for its small and comfortable outer shell. I imagined we would have walked in and the waitress would say "Sit anywhere, coffee?", we would pull up to the counter or booth and find ourselves a new favorite breakfast stop...I can only hope that they will be back in business soon. I admit there are plenty of restaurants that we have not mentioned and/or discovered...I could have mentioned the great Mexican breakfasts at Zendejas****! Please let us know some of your favorite breakfast places around town, I would love to discover and enjoy them too! Toll House Crookies (06/15/05).
Recently, I have been barraged with several articles about the 91 Express Toll Lanes! The more I read, the angrier I get…Toll increases, while there are increasing revenues? I know, MUSKRAT (a reference from ‘Meet the Fockers’)!!! The OCTA explains that the toll cost increases are necessary with the increase of drivers going through the 10-mile stretch to and from Corona. The OCTA goes on to explain there is need to ‘deflate’ those driver numbers with increased toll costs…The numbers don’t add up!
Here’s a breakdown of what’s been eating at me: The OCTA/91 Express Toll lanes brought in revenue of $20,400,000 in 2004; a 31% increase over the $15,600,000 in 2003. The average toll cost has also increased 31% from $2.87 in 2003 to $3.65 in 2004; it currently sits at an average of $4.40 in 2005. The average trip is costing drivers $8.80 in 2005, where it only cost $5.74 in 2003; a 53% increase. By my estimates, 2004 revenue nets 11 cars per minute! The 2004 average toll cost increase over 2003 represents a 27% increase and 2005 increase over 2004 represents a 21% increase; or 24% per year for the next 5 years. Now, you may be reading this thinking I need some massage therapy or a cold shower to mellow out…those numbers are not the issue here! What I do, which tends to annoy everyone around me, is over analyze everything! When you take the numbers and start extrapolating them out over the duration of the next 5 years, that's when the maddness begins. Before I go into the specific number analysis, please understand that I am only posing a gross hypothetical for the sake of debate. By 2010, we will have to take out a 2nd and 3rd loan on our house to afford the trip to and from Oz! By my estimates with an annual revenue increase of 31% (not sustainable, but fun to analyze) per year, our average toll cost in 2010 would be $12.83 or $25.66 per trip (and revenue for OCTA would be $103,099,828.14). But, with this also comes added frustrations of net 29 cars per minute (versus the 11 in 2004, more than doubled). The parking lot at Walmart is moving faster at this point!
Today, I don’t believe there is a win/win situation for the 91 Express Lanes except for jobs and high paying ones at that! And not fast food jobs, but the kind of jobs that require a white collar and a calculator. Let’s influence the region and learn from cities like Temecula, Chino Hills, Irvine, etc.
In ending, as a reward for the $25.66 you just shelled out for the (insert expletive here) trip you just made in 2010 the (gang at) OCTA should bake fresh you a fresh batch of Toll House Cookies; or as I like to call them Toll House Crookies!!!

~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ Corona High School…Graduates! (06/01/05) Anyone who has driven past the Corona High School lately has probably noticed two things; dust and construction! There’s a new wing on the north side of the school, a warm inviting section that totally transforms 10th Street into something special for that one block. Now, the other side of the street is a whole different editorial! During the construction, I figured the school was transforming itself from a relic to a new symbol for Corona schools; I think we got half way there! The auditorium, administration building, library and clock towers design was meticulously done with the new city colors and style. The structures are accented with new landscaping including palm trees that give the campus a needed, fresh look. Now, if the city could go one step further to include landscaping for the grass areas where the streets meet with sprinklers; that would be a win-win for me! I know, phase 2…patience! I imagine the students who attend C.H.S. are fairly hum-drum over the prospects of anything new occurring at school; their ideas of excitement would be if school itself was canceled or worse! But, I am sure that they’ll look back when they are mature enough to say these changes were beneficial. Maybe not, we’ll leave that up for debate! The new smell alone is something to send a teenager over the edge; do you remember smelling the carbon paper when making exam copies…was that just me? Come 4th of July this year, when the school has its annual picnic, police fund raiser and fireworks show I intend to give it a close look; kick the tires if you will. I imagine I am not the only Corona resident who is interested (insert nosey here, says my wife) in seeing ‘Our dollars at work’. The marquee adds a certain ‘Time Square’ element that seems to be a real trend with high schools these days; my high school installed one recently. Student of the Month, upcoming football games and fundraisers emblazoned in lights! In ending, Corona-Norco Unified School District deserves congratulations. This project has given a great facelift to an area of the city that was sagging and dragging! The kids should be proud of what they have (you don’t have to admit your proud, I won’t tell anyone). What’s on your mind Corona? ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ Memorial Day Weekend in Corona (05/25/05) Spark up the barb-b-q, there’s a holiday weekend in our future! Summer officially kicks down the door Memorial Day weekend and for longtime Corona residents that means heat, heat, heat! And even in my tenure living here in the city, the heat always sneaks up on me! For this editorial, I thought I would visit some area websites to see what’s planned for the long weekend…to my surprise, I found nothing; no parades, no festivals, nothing. So, that got me thinking about what I would do (assuming I had the time) in Corona on Memorial Day weekend! Corona’s parks are a great place to start…what’s more fun than a picnic in the park? There are too many parks in the city to focus on only one, so I will suggest to my readers to select one and make arrangements early. Begin with smelling the coals from the bar-b-q burning…the burgers, the dogs, tri-tip and chicken. Next, bring the Frisbee, bring the kids and bring some sun block!!! Events like this are usually shrouded in large groups of people and less than desirable per-table ratios. Ants are included, no purchase necessary! Homemade potato/macaroni salad always beats out the store bought, in my opinion…but, then there are always homemade baked-beans! Either way, you will leave the park larger than you were when you arrived, with some fond Memorial Day memories to flash back on. Now, let’s talk about a stopping off for some ice cream before we go to our next destination. When I was a kid, ‘Thrifties’ ice cream was the only ice cream that was worth living for…at a dime a scoop, who could go wrong? But, now we adults are faced with a barrage of ice cream outlets including ‘31 Flavors’ and ‘Cold Stone Creamery’. For several different reasons I like both outlets equally. 31 Flavors* will serve up a sundae that is sure to leave marks; on your face, shirt and hands (am I the only messy one here?)! And with so many flavors to select, there’s a flavor for everyone. Cold Stone Creamery** on the other hand represents the evil-sweet-tooth in us all! Take some chocolate ice cream, nuts, peanut butter, the kitchen sink and mix it all together to get a quick ice cream fix…eat it fast, the heat will not be your friend!
End the day with a movie at Edwards Cinema*** and/or a walk through the Fender Museum! I mention both because they will be air-conditioned and don’t cost a lot of money. You do not have to be a total music enthusiast to enjoy the museum. And, you do not have to be a Star Wars enthusiast to enjoy a movie (dare I say). So, buy some popcorn and some snacks. Bring a friend, a spouse or ditch them for the tranquility of solitude…it is your holiday weekend, after all!
So, now that I have planned your weekend I have yet to make plans for mine…maybe I will swim or do some yard work or take the dog to the Corona Dog Park. That’s it, I will pack a picnic-lunch, stop to get some ice cream and end up at the dog park! See, things always seem to work out as planned…HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!
* Corona has I believe (2) of them (Across from Wal-Mart in South Corona and near the 15 freeway on Magnolia). ** Corona has (1) with 2 on the way (Main Street Village and Dos Lagos). *** Corona has (2) located at The Crossings and on Main Street near the Villa Amalfi Restaurant.
What’s on your mind Corona? ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ Uno, Dos…Lagos? Corona Embarks on a Mega Lifestyle Outdoor Mall, Residential living area and Business Park called Dos Lagos (05/18/05) And you thought The Crossing at Corona was a large scale project, Dos Lagos stands to chew it up and spit it out by the time it is finished. By comparison, The Crossing at Corona cost an estimated $100 million dollars whereas Dos Lagos estimated cost is upwards of $400 million. The benefits that Dos Lagos will pay to our Community, Region, local economy and Corona residents will be unparallel to anything this city has attempted! The Dos Lagos development initially raised my interest some time ago with the prospects of new homes being built in a mixed-use community. What peaked my interest next was the vast variety of retailers that would follow the smell of money straight to Corona. Additionally, think about all of the Orange County transplants that have come to Corona (and to outer regions) for the promise of greater home/land square footage, affordability and the building of new lives. The early settlers (let’s say 5-15 years ago) knew something big in Corona was possible; “build it and they will come” echoed in my cranium. Dos Lagos promises to be on-par with the shopping and restaurants available in Orange County. So, what’s needed next to make it a success? The dismantling and exile of the Quick Crete facility that serves as an eye sore for the entire project; I compare it to a ketchup stain on a finely pressed white shirt (so unsettling). Secondly, the SE Corporation must execute on its promised improvements to the existing and newly constructed roads; I believe they will. Lastly, Eagle Glen residents must understand they will loose some of their freedoms by living where they live. Here are some numbers/factoids to consider:
The 9.5 acre ‘Heart’ Lakes and park-like settings of Dos Lagos (meaning two lakes in Spanish) will serve as the hub and focal point for most activities in the community.
With a property tax of 1%, sales tax of 7.75%, hotel occupancy tax of 10%, estimated assessed valuation of $400 million dollars (we are being generous), 575,000 square feet of lifestyle retail and 600 hotel rooms…that would generate approximately $9 million dollars per year in tax revenue (the example will fluctuate according to the volume of retail, hotel and business activities). Note: This amount underscores all of the tax revenue that occurs from new jobs, new residents, construction activity and the like.
The business development will bring nearly 500,000 square feet of ‘Class A’ office space to Corona, not to mention the countless jobs needed near our homes.
‘Citrus Springs at Dos Lagos’, built by Taylor Woodrow offering 147 golf community homes/units recently built and open to the public, are approximately 95% sold through; ‘Temescal Heights’ and ‘Owens Cove’ are the latest communities to hit the market.
7.35 acres have been set aside for the Live-work/loft and Senior condominiums, representing 174-180 lake-adjacent residences. This will enable wider housing and employment choices throughout the Corona community; the Live-work/loft and Senior condominiums will be developed by First Pacific Homes.
10 million cubic yards of earth have been moved to make way for this project. The project includes a championship golf course designed by Mathew E. Dye.
The 575,000 square foot Lifestyle Retail Center anticipated opening will be Summer/Fall 2006. It will be a blend of creative water elements, changing grades of elevation and ‘open-air’ gathering spots for pedestrians, with a Main Street appeal.
The Dos Lagos office and hotel offerings are expected to be in development by late 2005 to early 2006.
Poag & McEwen lifestyle centers have prospered leases with such distinctive and in-demand stores and restaurants such as J. Jill, Talbot’s, William-Sonoma, Coldwater Creek, Pottery Barn, Chico’s, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, P.F. Chang’s and Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano to create a shopping and entertainment destination that can not be competed with. The project includes an open-air retail pedestrian plaza flanked by restaurants overlooking the two lakes. For anyone who is not familiar with the design of the project it would serve you well to visit the Dos Lagos link above, it is unusually spectacular and unique for its category. The pedestrian walkway spills out to a stage on the lakes where an amphitheater will hold approximately 400 people. It is anticipated that the stage will be used for family-oriented concerts and entertainment; summers in Corona will never be the same…happily, I say! What’s on your mind Corona? ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ Thanks to the Corona Police Officers/SWAT (05/11/05) A thank you on behalf of the Corona residents for last week’s protection at the Edward’s Cinema on Main/Hamner and U-Haul center. So often the stories that wind up on the pages of newspapers and on television offer a quick-factual check of the events. What we decided to do is follow those up with a thank you for your courage and heroics. In the event area residents (and our visitors outside the area) are not aware, Corona officers responded to a 911 call of a man who cut his wrists with a knife at Corona Kmart on Main/Hamner. While approaching the suspect, he attempted to carjack 2 separate automobiles when police chased him into a Corona Edward’s Cinema. Unfortunately, the suspect did not stand down approaching officers with the knife and was mortally wounded. No one would opt to have a life taken; in this situation the officers protected many area residents, businesses, oncoming drivers, and more. Shortly after the Main/Hamner incident, Corona officers/SWAT responded to a similar at the U-Haul facility with an angry patron; the suspect was apprehended. It should be noted that for Corona, California this should be the most excitement we see for another 6-9 months; fingers-crossed. Thanks again! Note: Next week’s editorial will be on Dos Lagos. What’s on your mind Corona? ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ 6th Street is no Sesame Street! But…(05/04/05) I really struggled with this week’s topic and Walla, 6th street came to mind! For anyone reading this editorial whose unaware of the street in question, 6th street is the main drag through the City of Corona. I figure at one point in time, the street was a thriving, bold imprint of the city. Today, it is riddled with a mix of tired retailers (including liquor stores, bars and a gun shop), barren dirt lots (can’t forget the grazing shopping carts), par-standard buildings…colliding with the next generation of newer buildings/shopping centers, the car mart(s) and fast food alley! Don’t get me wrong, the City Council has made good strides in cleaning up the area of 6th Street. But, there is so much work left to do! Impressions wear heavy on people, especially first impressions. I will name a few of the successes I have noticed (credit, where credit is due): The new Quality Toyota/Hyundai facility, the new Aryes addition, Drive Time auto, Miguel’s renovation, new Sav-On Drugs, new Business building east of Main and the newly painted shopping center on the corner of 6th and Lincoln. Today, there should be a greater emphasis placed on ‘quick-win’ projects in order to clean up the main drag of Corona… I will name a few of the disasters I have noticed recently (credit, where credit is due): Koppur Lantern Liquor, the shopping center on the corner of 6th and Paseo Grande with the Country Store liquor (big-red-barn, here’s where I chuckle…bulldoze it and start over), Hunney’s, the Mad Greek, Edwards Crown Plaza and numerous barren dirt lots; given the time, I could probably think of more. One word…paint! I envision compartmentalized sections starting at the Maple exit off the 91 freeway stretching to (and past) the15 freeway. ‘Smart’ categories brought together such as hotel/motel accommodations, better restaurants/eateries, new/used cars facilities and new-invigorating retailers. The façades of the buildings would be freshly painted, the sidewalks and surrounding areas would be clean/groomed and landscaped, the signs would be new and attractive and people would be bustling through the streets onto their favorite retail shops; safely, eagerly, with a renewed interest in downtown life! So in ending this rant, please let me touch on one aspect of 6th street that can not be ignored…and that is public safety! 6th Street is littered with migrant/suspect personalities, dimly lit streets and in some cases (not all) an absence of the presence of police. I would not let my family, nor would I be found on 6th Street after dark; that’s a sad reality! Buff up the police presence, continue the cleaning and revitalization, compartmentalize sections of the street into ‘smart’ categories and light up that street! When asked about…Are there any immediate and/or future plans for the renovation of 6th street?
“We are in the design phase of planning the renovation of the streetscape along Sixth Street from Grand Blvd on the west and east, and along Main Street from Third Street on the north to Grand Blvd. on the south”. “The first phase of project construction will consist of improvements along Sixth Street such as new lighting, expanded sidewalks with decorative pavers, new landscaping and irrigation, banners, new bus shelters, installation of medians with landscaping and lighting, intersection treatments and in-pavement lighted crosswalks. The project also includes improvements such as traffic signal upgrades, storm drain installation, water and sewer repairs and street rehabilitation. We anticipate adoption of the plans for Phase I in Sept 05 and construction to began soon there after…”
And When asked about…Do you anticipate additional phases …improvements further East? “There is another project that will make improvements for East Sixth from El Sobrante to the east city boundary. But nothing right now for the portion along Sixth from Grand Blvd to El Sobrante, but that is not to say it will not be enhanced in the future”. What’s on your mind Corona? ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ Miguel’s…the McDonald’s of the Inland Empire! (04/27/05) Big Mac, Filet-o-fish, Quarter Pounder, Carne Asada tacos..? One of the best kept secrets of the Inland Empire and the City of Corona is Miguel’s and Miguel’s Jr. (for this editorial, we will refer to them simply as Miguel’s). Smack-dab in the heartland of fast food heaven emerges the saviors of salsa, the temptresses of tortillas, the kings of Carne Asada! Like most Corona residents, you meet up with Miguel’s about the same time you are pulling off the 15 or 91 freeway (cursing and waving your fists). You pull up to an array of food choices off the marquee and that’s when you realize…they got you again! That's when I'm reminded of a line from an old movie "Oh, The Colonel with his wee beady eyes...He puts an addictive chemical that makes you crave for it nightly [expletive]!" It turns out to be nothing more than the 3 ingredients that always draw me back…salt, cheese and grease (I stop here to sigh. Ok!). With 9 locations in the Corona, Norco, Fontana area (I will stay Inland Empire centric and ignore the Orange County location…they have enough restaurants!), odds are you have eaten here at least once. Monday’s we deem “Miguel’s Monday”, we are corny that way! Maybe you have seen one of their TV campaigns on the local cable channels (visit their website…I love the angry hot sauce!), or maybe you have noticed their sponsorship in the community somewhere. Either way, we all seem to be effected by Miguel’s in some way. Here’s where I stop the momentum and complain a bit. When the ‘Miguel's Sonora Style & Cantina’ first opened its doors, we visited the restaurant waiting 1 ½ hours to get seated at a small table in the center of the floor to find (3) bones in my fish taco’s. I complained (nicely) to the Manager, you know what the end result was? Nada (zero, for our English speaking friends)...we have never returned. And on a side note...’Fresh Guacamole’ to me denotes fresh ingredients like Avocados, tomato’s, onion, garlic, lime juice and seasonings…not that drippy stuff you are trying to pass off! Ok, I digress…Don’t get me wrong, I love Miguel’s as a quick shot in the arm! A long day at the office, on the road and into my driveway (or in this case a detour to Miguel’s driveway) before reaching home to get settled in for the evening…instead of sheep I count El Potato Burritos, Taco Salads (not ordinary ones either), and Miguel's Jr. "Original" Burritos!!! Zzzz. What’s on your mind Corona? ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ DAM! (04/20/05) This week something close and dear to everyone’s heart in Corona: Prado Dam. You may not immediately notice and/or really care in quite the way I do, but the Dam has become a blank canvas for ‘taggers’ (for the innocent out there reading this, that’s GRAFFETI ARTISTS)!!! Here’s some background. I found this posting on the Internet:
Possible leak in Prado Dam prompts evacuation of 500 homes, 330 mobile homes Posted by 'AreaMan' to doug from upland On News/Activism 01/14/2005 1:29:01 PM PST · 93 of 110 "Unfortunately the logo is now adorned with the 'taggings' of our diverse hip-hop 'culture', i.e. graffiti"
Corona’s Prado Dam, as much a concrete and dirt jungle, has looked better in its day; Much better! The Centennial graphic commemorating 200 years of freedom should represent a welcome mat to outsiders, the welcome bill-board for drivers from neighboring cities when they pass through Corona onto their destinations. We are marketing the entrance to our city like “Welcome to Corona: A place of hard knocks” (similar to some Los Angeles neighborhoods) and not as the growing, thriving Inland Empire city that sits on the fringes of Orange County. [Detour from the dam…] Guess what? Graffiti is on the rise in Corona! In my neighborhood alone (a nicer, newer neighborhood in Corona), we have been hit on walls, sidewalks and street signs. FYI…From the Corona website: To report graffiti locations, please call us between 6:00 AM and 2:00 PM at (951) 278-3227. My suggestions…just call, get it on the city’s log!!! The website goes on to instruct that if you see an act of graffiti in progress call 911 with the location and the description of who’s tagging. [Ok, back to the dam…] Here’s my simplistic suggestion for the dam and the City Officials? Clean up the graffiti sooner than later, it looks horrible! Second, put together a contingency plan to replace the centennial graphic! Commission a local Corona artist to move us into the 21st century. In thinking about a new graphic, bring something Corona-esqe, alive and dynamic to the table. Third, if the graphic can not be replaced sandblast the old one and have a clean slate. Lastly, think about landscaping the surrounding areas including the opposite sides of the freeway…spruce up the joint with California native plants that are easy on the eye…Palm trees are nice!
"...the Army Corps that owns the dam, is going to rebuild the spillway over the next couple of years. Then they will let us repaint.It will probably be the same type image as now" states City Hall employee. What’s on your mind Corona?
~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ Corona Crossings…the street! (04/13/05) Corona has taken a huge leap of faith with the new development of the The Crossings at Corona off Calejco Drive and you know what…it is a WINNER! The new development offers the best of what Corona stands for as it moves into the 21st century! Retail stores are flocking! Restaurants are flocking! And so are Corona residents… I’ll tell you I feel like a kid when I enter the center, because there’s a certain BUZZ in the air; something fresh, new…ALIVE! I am figuring most Corona residents who have visited the center come away feeling the same way. And there’s still many store fronts that remain vacated and/or in the midst of being readied for opening. That’s exciting stuff! So, let’s breakdown Corona’s newest and brightest retailers/restaurants…the usual suspects (Target, Kohl’s, Barnes and Noble, Cost Plus, Marshall’s, Ross, Best Buy, Chili’s, Starbuck’s and Petco). But, among those usual suspects comes some real shinning stars (BJ’s Brewery, Ethan Allen, Bombay Company, Regal Entertainment, Pier One, Macaroni Grill and Old Navy). There is mention of JC Penny and King’s Fish House coming to the center…interesting! The Crossings at Corona (and eventually Dos Lagos, we’ll address them later) will become the hub of Corona…plain and simple! Think of the great centers of Southern California…The Irvine Spectrum, The Grove, The Block, Tustin Marketplace, Victoria Garden’s and The Crossings at Corona jostled in the mix with them. So, what’s the impact? We could talk about traffic, I will differ that subject for now. Here’s the impact…Tax revenue! And as Martha likes to say “That’s a good thing”! For any Corona residents who have not visited The Crossings at Corona, here is a picture of the center. What’s on your mind Corona? ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ My town…Mylanta! (03/22/05) What Corona is, is a town decidedly ruled by its traffic…within the city limits and on its freeways. Freeway, by the very standard of its wording is not FREE! We (Corona residents) are either subjected to a regiment of sitting on our ‘freeway or cheating by traveling in the ’91 express’; I would love to meet the person who named it an ‘express’! So, needless to say we have limited choices and it’s not free (it either consumes our time or our wallets, by my standard that is not free). So, what’s the answer? Will we need to boar a tunnel through Eagle Glen, through the Cleveland National Forest to spill unto the O.C. (Is the O.C. ready for us I.E. people, pitch forks and torches blazing)? Camera and traffic direction could help? Perhaps the extra revenue from traffic cops sitting at every entrance to the 91 freeway (citing drivers) could pay for all of those upgrades…I am sure the Corona residents would not mind!
What I struggle with is the concept of further development of housing along the 15 freeway; more houses equal more people compounded by more automobiles. Here is a rough example of our cities strategy: We are trying to build a Ferrari on an old Fiat’s frame! Now, the frame may seem sound, durable and capable of holding the Ferrari’s body (but, we all know what going to happen to the Ferrari). Let’s address the frame (for the slow folks, that’s the 91 freeway) and then let’s build the Ferrari. I would love to co-exist with a thriving, developed city with a freeway that could handle a full load; reality is we are not there yet.
What’s on your mind Corona?
